Is it a Good Idea to Turn a Bedroom into a Walk-In Wardrobe?

While there are many benefits of having a walk-in wardrobe, not everyone has the space to build them. If this is the case for you too, you might consider converting a bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe or even merging a walk-in closet with your wardrobe.

Let’s take a look at how this can be done and what factors need to be considered:

How to decide if turning a bedroom into a walk in wardrobe is the right decision for you?

If you keep running out of storage space and you have an extra bedroom in the house that you don’t use much, then turning it into a walk-in wardrobe will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever take.

What to consider when converting your bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe?

When converting the bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe, here are some things you might need to consider:

  • Covering the windows: For our bedrooms, many of us prefer natural light or sheer curtains but when you turn that room into a walk-in wardrobe, you’ll need more privacy. Too much natural light in a walk-in closet can even cause sun-fading of your clothes. So consider adding blinds or curtains to any uncovered or semi-covered windows.
  • Consider the lighting: While too much sunlight in a walk-in wardrobe isn’t welcome, too little light can also be off-putting. Lighting plays a crucial role in the look and feel of a walk-in wardrobe which is why many clients go for chandeliers and pendant lights on the ceiling on built-in LED lighting on the wardrobe itself. So make sure to invest in ample and good quality artificial lighting.
  • Add a mirror: If your bedroom already has a fell-length mirror or a vanity table, you can consider keeping it for your walk-in wardrobe as it’s pretty much incomplete without a mirror. But if you don’t have one or if you feel like the old one doesn’t go with the new look of your wardrobe, then you need to consider getting one. Talk to your wardrobe designer to decide the right size and place for the mirror.
  • Have some seating options: Depending on the size of your walk-in wardrobe, you need to decide on seating options. If it’s smaller in size, you can go for pouffs or ottomans, while for medium and large size walk-in wardrobes, you can even go for a bench, a love seat or a small sofa.
  • Your storage needs: Every person has different storage needs depending on the nature of their belongings and how they want to store them. For example, some people like more hanging space to hang their shirts while others prefer to fold and organise them in shelves. So you need to consider all your storage needs and discuss them with your designer to come up with a design that meets your requirements.
  • Choose your accessories: People love walk-in wardrobes because they’re so much more than just a storage space. They’re a reflection of your style and personality so accessorise your wardrobe with a bespoke rug, lamps a painting or a photo. We recommend going for high-quality accessories as they will give your wardrobe a high-end and luxurious look.

Other than these considerations, if you’re completely upgrading the look of the room, you might also need to think about the flooring, painting or wall-papers - as all this needs to be done before the wardrobe is installed.

What is the cost of converting a bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe?

The cost of converting a bedroom into a walk-in closet depends on the size of the wardrobe and the quality of the wardrobe that you’re going for.

At FCI London, we only deal with high-end Italian and German wardrobes so the costs start at £2000 per linear meter.

The cost of a walk-in wardrobe also varies based on the kind of interiors and accessories that you choose.

How do I build a bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe?

Apart from converting a bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe, another option is to merge your bedroom with the walk-in wardrobe

This can easily be done if your bedroom is big enough to accommodate both sections and if it isn’t we can still work something out to help you keep your bed in the room.

If you have a big bedroom, then the easiest approach is to divide the room in half by using a wardrobe as a divider and using the other half of the room as a walk-in wardrobe (as seen in the image below on the left).

In case you want the walk-in wardrobe to be an enclosed space then instead of using a wardrobe as a partition, you can install sliding glass doors to divide the room.

The other option is slightly more complicated as it can be off-putting if not done the right way. This is to adjust the bed in your walk-in wardrobe, in a way that seems natural and not out of place.

When it comes to building the walk-in wardrobe, you have the option of doing it yourself or getting a company involved. But converting a bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe is a complicated process as compared to building a simple wardrobe, so we feel that in this scenario, it is best to go with a company.

Make sure that you choose one with good reviews and with a talented design team that will survey the room, discuss your requirements and come up with a plan that makes the best use of every inch of your bedroom space.

A walk-in wardrobe is a lifelong investment and especially when you’re converting a bedroom into a wardrobe, you can’t risk making any mistakes. So if you need help at any part of this journey, feel free to get in touch with our award-winning wardrobe design team.
