Do Fitted Wardrobes Have To Go To The Ceiling?

Do Fitted Wardrobes Have To Go To The Ceiling?

Are you planning for a new closet and wondering, do fitted wardrobes have to go to the ceiling?

Whether a floor-to-ceiling closet suits your needs depends on your personal preference among other factors. However, installing this type of wardrobe has many great advantages.

1. What are the benefits of fitted wardrobes over traditional wardrobes or armoires?

Unlike freestanding cabinets, built-in wardrobes make the most of your available space because the frames are custom-made to your room’s design. Particularly if fitted from floor to ceiling, you will benefit from having optimised space for the storage of your belongings.

Due to the extensive selection of colours and finishings available, it is also really easy to match your closet with your decor and furniture. And, full-length fitted wardrobes make a room appear bigger by drawing your eyes up to the ceiling.

For smaller rooms, we recommend adding mirrors which will reflect the natural light available and add depth to your room.

We are fanatical about luxury fitted wardrobe design.

2. How do you determine how much storage space you need in your wardrobe, and what should you store there?

Whilst the size and shape of clothing items will vary considerably, here are some general guidelines to help you with your wardrobe size calculation.

For both ladies and men’s suits, allow around 6cm for each set. For shirts and blouses, allow about 4cm. When it comes to dresses, 5cm should suffice per item and you'll need around 4cm for skirts and slacks folded over hangers.

A well-planned wardrobe should allow you to fit all of your belongings comfortably. By combining rails, drawers, racks, shelves and bins in smart manner, you will be able to store clothing, linen, accessories, toys, baskets, sporting gear and any other items that need a home. Everything should have its place.

3. How high should your wardrobe be to maximize storage space and accessibility for all your clothes and belongings?

The height of a fitted wardrobe is often determined by the height of your door lintel which is usually around 210-220 cm. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the floor-to-ceiling space and opt for a full-height wardrobe. Avoid making your closet too short as this will compromise on maximising your space.

Allow 105cm of vertical space for suits; 150cm for dresses and 90cm for skirts, shirts, and blouses. Your fabulous evening gowns will require a hanging height of about 180cm whilst saris need 100cm.

For kid’s wardrobes, the vertical garment hanging section should be around 70cm.

4. Are there any other ways to customise your fitted wardrobe to make it more functional for your needs and lifestyle?

There is plenty of room to indulge your every need and desire when it comes to wardrobe design. In our 35 years of customising premium fitted wardrobes, we have fulfilled a myriad of design requests for our happy clients.

Some clever custom add-ons that we have created for our wardrobes include a built-in ironing board cabinet alongside a laundry sorting centre with multiple laundry bins.

We can also finish off accessory drawers with velvet lining to keep delicate items protected and free from tangling.

Another wardrobe feature that we are passionate about is good lighting. Adding custom lighting to your mirrors is a popular choice, and we can install motion-triggered lighting in different sections of your closet for the ultimate high-tech feel.

Finish this off with ambient lights in your walk-in wardrobe or dressing area and you will always feel like royalty when you get dressed.

5. What are some tips for organizing your clothes once they're in the wardrobe closet space?

Different types of clothes require uniquely tailored organisation options to ensure effective storage. As a rule, never cram too many pieces into a tight space as this leads to wrinkles and makes it difficult to find what you're looking for.

Another great tip is to store similar items together. Designate drawers or shelves for each type of garment (accessories, undergarments, tops, bottoms). Alternatively, if you have lots of clothing for a variety of occasions, you could organise your compartments by purpose, such as work, workout, casual, dress-up or seasonal.

Keep anything you use often within easy reach and avoid hanging onto items that you haven't used in a long time. Yes, habitual hoarders, regular cleanouts are compulsory!

In Conclusion

The height of your fitted wardrobe is up to you and does not have to reach the ceiling. However, make sure that you allocate adequate room to store your clothing freely as per our recommended guidelines.

Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes have the advantage of added storage space, so our advice would be to go for this option if your room allows it.
