Are Round or Rectangular Dining Tables Better?

Are round or rectangular tables better

Both classic shapes, which one gets your winning vote: are round or rectangular tables better for your home? The simple answer is - it depends.

You have to consider where you intend on placing the table and what you'll be using it for. Round tables are generally better for small spaces and for facilitating conversation, while rectangular tables are better for larger spaces and for activities that require more surface area.

Ultimately, the best shape for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. Read on as we discuss the two styles in depth.

Factors to consider when choosing between a round or rectangular table

In our experience designing dining rooms, we have found that there are five key factors that you should be thinking about when you're looking at a new table.

The shape of your room

One of the key deciders of the dining table you choose is the shape of your space. Adding a square table to a room with awkward angles will result in a lot of wasted space. On the other hand, a round table will leave too much negative space in a large rectangular area. It is best to work with and not against the layout of your room to create a smooth visual flow.

Space

Secondly, you are going to be limited by the size of your room. Ideally, whichever table you choose, there should leave a gap of at least 60cm between its edges and the closest wall or pieces of furniture. As such, if you have a compact dining room, a round table will likely be a better option as they take up less space and can fit into tight areas easily. Don’t forget to factor in the chairs!

However, sometimes when space is limited you may decide to fit your table against a wall. In this case, rectangular designs will work better as they will make more efficient use of the layout. Look at how your existing furniture is arranged then figure out where best your new table will sit.

Style

Aesthetically, the two table shapes add a different look to a home. Round tables draw the eye and surrounding elements in. As such, they anchor a room and often become a centrepiece for the area. With the right decor and colour, they can uplift a decor scheme.

On the other hand, rectangular tables carry an air of grandeur, as seen with this Vertigo Dining Table by Silvano Luxury. They are better suited to formal settings and can look very glamorous when decorated with all the trimmings.

Social interaction

Another factor to consider is how you intend to use your table. You will find that round tables are better for social interaction as everyone is within audible range of each other.

Rectangular designs, however, often result in the separation of people as it is difficult to carry conversations across the entire length of the table. Also, think about whether your family time includes playing board games. It will no doubt be easier to play these around a round table where everyone can reach the boards.

Finally, a circular setting does not require a table head, so it is generally more inclusive and more relaxed. Factor this in if it is important to your hosting experience.

Child Safe

The last aspect to consider is child safety. In a house with kids and pets, you have to think about the effect of sharp corners on the little ones as they run around the home. In such situations, round tables like this Triumph Dining Table trump rectangular ones which present a greater hazard of collisions.

It’s not just children that bump against table corners either — most adults know the feeling of a bruised hip or thigh from walking into the edge of a table!

Advantages and disadvantages of round tables

Advantages

  • Great space-savers as they tend to have a smaller surface area than rectangular designs.
  • Excellent for intimate settings and conversations as everyone will be close to one another and interaction is easy across the table.
  • Family-style meals flow more easily around a circular table where everyone can share and pass plates with easy access to all items.
  • The singular pedestal base of most round tables leaves plenty of legroom for people seating around the table.

Disadvantages

  • When the table is large, the distance from the centre increases making it difficult for groups to converse and for items to be reached.
  • Their shape limits them from sitting flush against a wall which can result in wasted space.
  • Most designs do not come with extensions so you are limited to one size.
  • The round edges mean you lose out on tabletop space.

Advantages and disadvantages of rectangular tables

Advantages

  • Can accommodate a large gathering of people making them ideal for events that require a lot of seating.
  • Similar to the Double Extending Dining Table by Naos, most designs come with extensions so the length and height can be adjusted accordingly.
  • They provide ample space for place setting and tablescaping which is great when you are hosting an elaborate dinner.
  • There is a wider range of style and design options in comparison to those available for round tables.

Disadvantages

  • Rectangular tables tend to take up more room, so they are not ideal for smaller spaces.
  • Although they can accommodate more people, you can lose the intimate feel and ability to easily converse with everyone at the table.
