Interior Design Tips For Table Centrepieces

Interior design tips for table centerpieces

A table is a furniture staple found in almost every room of the home. From the dining room statement piece to the hallway console, from bedroom pedestals to kitchen islands, these furniture items are a key element to home interiors.

How you accessorize your table should be informed primarily by the surface material - (wood, glass, metal, marble) and by your personal style statement. With those two figured out, all you will need to do is follow these easy tips and tricks.

1. Don't overcrowd your centrepiece

The first rule is simple: less is more. It is hard to decide what is worse, leaving your table blank because you are too afraid to decorate it, or overcrowding it with as many artefacts as you can buy.

A cluttered centre piece introduces chaos and discord to a room regardless of how well the rest of the space is styled. Whilst traditional tables, like this Military Smoked Oak Coffee Table by Eichholtz, allow you to have multiple ornaments, the less-is-more principle still applies.

A good guide is to use the rule of threes. That means using an odd number of pieces on your table to add visual interest and achieve balance. You will find that three elements are usually just enough to achieve a clean modern look regardless of the table size.

2. Use a variety of heights and shapes to add interest

When doing your shopping, pick objects which vary in shape and height. Allowing the eye to travel from low to high objects or from cubes to spheres creates an aesthetically interesting centrepiece.

Also, differentiating your elements allows each item to get noticed, elevating your interior design from basic to pro. Where space and position allow, don’t be afraid to make a statement with tall pieces such as a luxury vase or a large statue.

Your shape variations can be subtle yet effective - imagine a minimalist centrepiece with just three ballerinas in different poses and heights.

If you are having trouble deciding what to pick, think of your personal likes and interests, after all, your home’s decor should be a reflection of yourself. Vases, bowls, trinkets and crockery can all be set in a permanent arrangement that perfectly reflects your style.

3. Stick to a colour scheme or use neutrals for a timeless look

As stated earlier, your table’s decor should tie into the existing style statement of your home. This includes your colour scheme.

Take a step back and examine your room to see which colour will either complete or complement the current palette. This may be a good time to pull out your colour wheel, just to be sure.

Without going through this process, you risk buying otherwise stunning pieces that unfortunately will look out of place in the space. Once you have your colour scheme pinned down, play with different tints; a dark table will look better with lighter elements and vice-versa.

If all of this sounds daunting, stick to neutrals. Neutrals are a great investment as they will transcend both time and design trends.

4. Balance the visual weight of your centrepiece by using objects of different sizes

When decorating your tablescape, the goal is to make it look completely balanced. Always rethink your shopping cart if all your items are uniform in size.

What you want is to place a large object next to a small one, which is beside a medium-sized piece. By achieving this contrast, the visual weight of the table will be balanced.

Trays, books and vases make great large table pieces, whilst candles and diffusers can be small stylish elements to add.

5. Add natural elements for a touch of rustic charm

We love adding a little bit of understated rustic charm to our tables. Natural elements are an easy yet sophisticated way to anchor your centrepiece. Handcrafted vases with natural finishes such as this Jana Vase by Cappellini are striking accessories that usually become talking points when guests come over.

Take some shears and head to your garden to hunt for some sculptural branches and stems that you can add to your table. Foliage will freshen any room and you can change it according to the different seasons.

Apart from the greens, you won’t go wrong with rustic roots, unpolished wooden bowls and stone candle holders. Let your surroundings inspire you!

Decorate like you mean it

You can add almost anything to your table centrepiece, but you want it to say something about you. Keep your centrepieces personal to your taste and style by adding meaningful items that tell a story of the places you have visited or memorable experiences you have had. Your decor should spark conversation and give a sneak peek into who you are.
