Everything you need to know about Supersalone 2021

Salone del Mobile – or the Milan Furniture Fair – takes place every year in Italy. In its 59-year history, it has attracted thousands of prestigious brands and emerging talents, all of whom come to showcase their creations and build a name for themselves in the competitive world of interior design.

Last year the event was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year the event will go ahead but in a significantly different format, resulting in a special edition called the Supersalone.

So what’s in store?

The Superalone will take place in two halls across two levels and will feature curated brands operating from mini booths in a museum style, as per the stand render above. The displays are designed as a ‘static showcase’ rather than a commercial stand. The stands will allow a maximum of two staff members only for social distancing reasons. Visits are by appointment on a first come first served basis as limited numbers are allowed in the venue.

Alongside traditional B2B events, this Salone will also feature B2C appointments open to non-professionals. The pieces exhibited at the fair will be available for purchase at special prices. The Triennale Milano design museum will serve as a downtown hub of the Supersalone, offering a selection of innovative design projects.  

Is it worth it?

One thing is for sure – the event will be dramatically different from the relaxed networking affairs of previous years. Many industry events will not take place or will be severely restricted to fall in line with social distancing rules. If you’re not quick enough to fill your diary with advance appointments, you may arrive in Mlian and end up with no meetings. If you’re uncertain about the value vs the cost of flights and accommodation etc, you may want to wait for the bumper edition of the event in April 2022 which plans to celebrate 60 years of Salone in style.
