Our daily experiences are significantly influenced by the way we relax, sleep, and wake up—those vulnerable moments just before we lose consciousness and enter dreams—in the bedroom. Even though we spend most of our time there unconscious, no other place has the same impact on our waking lives.
Bedroom projects are our favourite at FCI London because this room is usually the most cherished one in the house. Good quality bedroom furniture and good decor work together to create a sort of sensual refuge for the client.
Recently, our interior designer and manager, Benjamin Ibanez got to collaborate with Fabio Dovico Lupo for a very interesting project in Knightsbridge. The client wanted a simple yet contemporary look for all three bedrooms, but at the same time, they didn’t want it to look boring.

Chat NowWe chose some of our best-selling beds and bedside tables from Gamma and Dandy for this project and played around with shades of white and beige to keep with the client’s brief of wanting a minimalistic and contemporary look.
Since the bedrooms were relatively smaller in size, using wall shelving or murals behind the bed wouldn’t have worked, so we simply went for a single, statement-making wall art above the headboards.
The smaller size also meant that we could not add big chandeliers or pendant lights in these bedrooms so we went for recessed lighting along with simple and sleek table lamps.
The advantage of choosing recessed light is that one can create a well-lit yet soft ambience. Installing these lights in the corner of the room's ceilings also makes the room appear more expanded.
Another advantage of these lights is that they reduce clutter in the room as there are no cables or cords linked with them.
You might notice that the picture below on the right shows the frame placed on the headboards, but that was only for trial purposes, as the frame was finally hung a few inches above the headboard, as shown in the image on the left.
According to Benjamin, "It is important to keep a few inches of gap between the headboard and any wall art for a well-balanced look. Ideally, this gap should be at least 6 inches, but the final decision also depends on how high the ceiling is."
In this bedroom, we had to deal with the two wall cavities behind the bed, also referred to as wall niches. Heavy decor in these niches would again have been overwhelming for a small bedroom, so we chose to install lights and instead of opting for any heavy or complicated designs, we went for wall sconces for a subtle mood.
It is also a good idea to install adjustable or dimmable lights in these niches so they can also function as night lights.
Your bedroom furniture and decor go hand in hand if you want to create a comfortable space with a distinctive personality. And while furniture plays an extremely important role, it is often the final touches in the form of accessories, lighting and bedding that give your bedroom its character.
Above bed decor is important as it is often the first thing that catches one's eyes as they enter the bedroom, so this spot is a great place to tell a story about yourself or your taste. Use this space wisely to create the type of character you want for your bedroom, be it bold, wild, minimalistic or modern.
